- Information Requested
Could you provide me with responses to the following:
- Does the Scottish Ambulance Service currently employ either Emergency Nurse Practitioners, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Honorary Nurse Practitioners or Nurse Consultants in any operational roles?
- If yes, please provide a list of these roles.
- Does the Scottish Ambulance Service have a defined scope of practice for Emergency Nurse Practitioners, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Honorary Nurse Practitioners or Nurse Consultants it employs?
- If yes, please provide the scope of practice for these specific roles (including but not limited to skills, pharmacology, equipment.)
- If no, please advise what scope of practice applies to Emergency Nurse Practitioners, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Honorary Nurse Practitioners or Nurse Consultants employed by the Scottish Ambulance Service.
- If no to question 3, please advise of any additional clinical roles within the Scottish Ambulance Service that also do not have a defined scope of practice.
- Response
At the time of this response, SAS employs staff in the following nursing roles:
- Advanced Retrieval Practitioner (Nursing/Midwifery job family, Specialist Nursing sub-family, Band 7).
- Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (Nursing/Midwifery job family, Neonatal Midwifery Direct Clinical Care sub-family, Band 8B).
- Advanced Paediatric Nurse Practitioner (Nursing/Midwifery job family, Specialist Nursing sub-family, Band 8A).
We have not identified any current employees with the specific job titles Emergency Nurse Practitioner, Honorary Nurse Practitioner or Nurse Consultant.
The Scottish Ambulance Service does not hold an approved or formally adopted scope of practice document for Emergency Nurse Practitioners, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Honorary Nurse Practitioners or Nurse Consultants.
In the absence of an approved Service-specific scope of practice document, practitioners are expected to work within the requirements of their professional registration, education, competence, clinical governance arrangements and relevant national frameworks for advanced practice
In relation to question 6, the Scottish Ambulance Service does not maintain a central record identifying which clinical roles do or do not have a defined scope of practice document. To provide such a list would require the creation of new information through review and assessment of multiple roles. It is for this reason we have applied section 17 of the Freedom of Information Scotland Act 2002 as information not held.
